So You Think You Can Program Dance, Canada?

Panelists: Cathy Levy (Producer of Dance Programming, National Arts Centre), Philip Szporer (Scholar-in-Residence, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival)

Performers: BBoyizm, Cas Public, Out Innerspace Dance Theatre

Dance and multi-disciplinary presenters at the forefront of the field will elaborate on programming strategies, share impressions of emerging creative practices, and explore the curatorial aspects, competencies and qualities of programming contemporary dance in Canada. The session will include performances from three of Canada’s pre-eminent dance companies whose work will inform and inspire the conversation that follows.  Co-sponsored by The CanDance Network, la danse sur les routes du Québec, Ontario Dances and Made in BC – Dance on Tour, working together to support some of  the CAPACOA conference goals which include to promote a broader understanding and enjoyment of contemporary dance, develop and reach new audiences and markets in Canada and internationally.  [Venue: Dancemakers]

 

Cathy Levy

Cathy Levy was appointed NAC Dance Producer in 2000 where she has since expanded the Canadian and international presentation and production programs, as well as spearheaded numerous new initiatives.  Prior to the NAC she was, for over a decade, Producer of the Canada Dance Festival, Dance Programmer for Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre, and manager of several special projects.  Cathy lives in Montreal with her husband and two sons.

 

Philip Szporer

Philip Szporer has been immersed in the Canadian dance world for the past 30 years. Currently he teaches in the Contemporary Dance department at Concordia University and is a Scholar-in-Residence at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. He is recipient of a Pew Fellowship and the Jacqueline Lemieux Prize by the Canada Council of the Arts. In 2001, Philip along with Marlene Millar co-founded the arts film production company Mouvement Perpétuel.

 

BBoyizm

The dance company Bboyizm was founded by Artistic Director Crazy Smooth in 2006. Smooth’s vision for the company is to promote and preserve the foundation, authenticity and true essence of all street dances. Drawing on his technical background in rocking and b-boying, Crazy Smooth created IZM, an exploration into the very nature of artistic expression.

Their motto: “Dance to express! Not impress”.

 

Cas Public

Since 1989, CAS PUBLIC remained firmly rooted in Quebec's cultural reality. Hélène Blackburn, artistic director, increases its efforts to initiate the public of any ages to contemporary dance. Known for its fiery and high-performance dance, the company offers exceptional quality and a sustained presence on national and international stages.


Out Innerspace Dance Theatre

Out Innerspace Dance Theatre is devoted to creating contemporary dance and dance on screen with distinct integrity and artistry. Artistic Directors, David Raymond and Tiffany Tregarthen, are determined to create innovative yet accessible work, to push beyond traditional aesthetics and forms with unreserved ingenuity.
