CAPACOA Urges the Government to Revisit Growth in Pre-Budget Brief

August 3, 2012 - CAPACOA took a strong stance in favour of wellbeing in its federal pre-budget brief.

"We are unlikely to witness the level of economic growth we have observed in past decades. Consequently, it may be time for Canada to look at growth in a renewed way and to define new indicators for progress. INSEAD’s Global Innovation Index suggests indicators which may better reflect the strength of our knowledge economy. The OECD’s Better Life Index, or the Canadian Index of Wellbeing, bring forth an even more holistic view of growth – one that reflects overall quality of life."

Entitled Revisiting Growth: Leveraging the Resilience, Value and Resourcefulness of Canada’s Creative Sector in an Era of Change, this brief also makes strong pleas in favour of internal and international touring, cultural statistics gathering, and cross-sectoral collaboration. In it, CAPACOA framed the cultural sector within broader challenges related to training, health, environment and sustainable development.

This brief was submitted as part of the Federal pre-budget consultations. It responds to five specific questions raised by the Standing Committee on Finance. Answers to these questions were developed by CAPACOA's Advocacy Committee, in conjunction with our partner associations.
