February 11, 2013 - Canada’s 150th Anniversary is nearly tomorrow and many stakeholders are planning celebration activities.
Last fall, the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage tabled its report on Canada’s 150th Anniversary in 2017. Several representatives of the arts sector took part in the consultation process, and the report included a recommendation to “explore ways of assisting with the touring of Canadian performing arts groups during the 2017 celebrations.” The Honourable James Moore’s response came out on January 28. It focussed on the opportunities to celebrate our history now by recognizing important anniversaries on the road to 2017.
Others also are also beginning to celebrate. CBC/Radio-Canada, in partnership with VIA Rail Canada and Community Foundations of Canada, are sparking the national conversation about Canada’s upcoming 150th anniversary with the CANADA 150/2017 STARTS NOW conference series. Some arts organizations are collaborating in this series. One of them, the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards Foundation, has launched its own initiative to make Canada known as an ARTS NATION by 2017.
