CAPACOA writes to the Minister of Canadian Heritage regarding budget and workforce decrease

June 3, 2010 - The 2010 Report on Plans and Priorities released by the Department of Canadian Heritage, forecasts a decrease in overall spending on the arts of $20 million dollars including a cut of 24% to the existing workforce as the department “aligns to the Government of Canada outcomes”.

CAPACOA immediately sent a letter to Minister Moore asking for more clarification and information, stressing the value that we place in our relationship with departmental staff and suggesting that the impact of these cuts will have significant consequences for the presenting and touring sector:

"We urge you to ensure that the Department continue to be furnished with the appropriate resources to carry out the important task of facilitating access to the best of arts and culture for all Canadians, from coast to coast to coast."

We will continue to monitor this, as well as several other major provincial concerns in different parts of the country - namely in British Columbia where budgets have been decimated with a stroke of a pen.
