Harmonized Sales Tax

In 2009 in an attempt to better understand the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) and its impact on members, CAPACOA partnered with arts service organizations with members in Ontario to study the tax, provide members with tools they can use to understand the tax's impact, and to advocate for mitigation of the tax's impact, as necessary.

An outcome of the collaboration has been the development of a tool that members can use to determine the impact that the HST will have on any given organization. This template was prepared by Michael Herrera, C.A. and Heather Young (author of Finance for the Arts in Canada). To access the tools and to read more information, CLICK HERE .

There are three spreadsheets in the Excel workbook:

  1. Instructions on use of the template. (Note: because different organizations use different filing methodologies, it is recommended that you review these instructions beforehand).
  2. A Tax Legend which sets out the various scenarios under which HST is filed.
  3. The Template that can be completed by someone skilled in finance in any given organization - whether they be a staff person, or a volunteer.
